1883 -- AGS Archives   On August 26, 1883, a massive eruption begins of the Krakatoa volcano on an island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra.   John J. Montgomery made the first controlled flight in a glider on August 28, 1883, at Wheeler Hill, California.
