1937 -- AGS Archives

Explorer Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappear on July 2, 1937, near Howland Island in the central Pacific Ocean.
On October 30, 1937, the closest approach to the earth by an asteroid, Hermes, was measured to be 485,000 miles, which, to an astronomer, is a mere hair's width (asteroid now lost).
