1959 -- AGS Archives

  Luna 2 is launched on September 12, 1959, impacting on the moon on September 13 carrying a copy of the Soviet coat of arms, and becoming the first human-made object to hit the moon.
  On June 26, 1959, the St. Lawrence Seaway, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic, is opened.
