  On July 10, 1962, the revolutionary Telstar communications satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
  The U.S. space probe Mariner 2 approached within about 34,000 kilometers (21,600 miles) of Venus on December 12, 1962, transmitting first-time information about this planet.
