ANCIENT EMPIRES: Malta, Libya, and Tunisia aboard the Sea Cloud
October 19-31, 2005 (13 days)
Explore prehistoric and medieval sites on Malta, fantastic (but little known) Greek and Roman sites in Libya, and famous Carthaginian and Roman sites in Tunisia aboard the renowned Sea Cloud, the world's most elegant sailing vessel. Our journey begins with three luxurious nights on the island of Malta, where we will explore the medieval city of Valletta, the walled citadel of Mdina, the prehistoric wonder of the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, and the megalithic temples at Tarxien. Sail on to Libya, a repository of the grandest Roman ruins outside of Italy. With the lifting of U.S. travel restrictions to Libya in early 2004, American travelers can now visit its spectacular sites and rich cultural history for the first time in more than two decades. In Tunisia, visit an outstanding collection of Roman mosaics and explore the archaeological excavations at Carthage, including the fabled Punic harbor from where the Phoenicians would sail.
Lecturer: Dr. Ian Manners, Director and Chair of the Center and Department for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
Price: $6,995 and higher, plus airfare.

IN HARRIMAN'S WAKE: GRAND ALASKA VOYAGE, August 1 - 25, 2005 (25 days).
Part I: The Bering Sea, August 1 - 14, 2005 (14 days)
Part II: Alaska Coastal Odyssey, August 14 - 25, 2005 (12 days)
Follow in the wake of Edward H. Harriman's 1899 scientific expedition, which was to become the most significant ever undertaken in Alaskan waters. This epic voyage aboard the all-suite, 57-cabin Spirit of Oceanus knits together two exceptional voyages into one dramatic whole as you revisit the areas explored between Nome, Alaska and Vancouver, B.C., a voyage of almost 3,600 miles. In 25 life-changing days discover, as they did, the true wonders of Alaska - its welcoming people and thundering glaciers, clamoring wildlife, and scenic wonders, including the scenery of Glacier Bay, Unalaska, the Pribilofs, the Shumagin Islands, Kodiak, Sitka, and Metlakatla. Watch for whales, seals, bald eagles, bears, murres, and puffins. A fleet of Zodiacs allows access to remote ports of call and shores.
Lecturer: AGS President Jerome Dobson, Research Professor at the University of Kansas.
Price: $13,199 and higher, plus airfare.
Part I: $7,799 and higher.
Part II: $6,149, and higher.

EXPLORING THE NORTH ATLANTIC
August 10 - September 9, 2005 (31 days)
Part I: From Iceland to Greenland, August 10 - 26 (17 days).
Part II: From Greenland to Baffin Island, August 24 - September 9 (17 days).
Our two-voyage journey of discovery, high above the Arctic Circle, explores the fjords and glaciers of Iceland and western Greenland and the mountains and spectacular tundra of Arctic Canada at the optimum time of year-during the brief summer season, when these remote areas brim with life. This landscape of stunning fjords, myriad small coastal islands, calm sounds, cavorting whales, and a rugged interior is as intriguing as its cordial inhabitants. At night, the stars are vivid in the crystalline air, and dazzling Northern Lights might appear. Scan the waters, shores, and sky for a wide variety of wildlife-colonies of walrus with their impressive tusks, musk oxen, numerous shore birds and water birds preparing to migrate south after their breeding season, seals, several species of whales, and perhaps the mighty polar bear.
Lecturer: Dr. Vincent Malmström, Professor Emeritus of Geography at Dartmouth College.
Price: $11,700 and higher, plus airfare.
Part I: $6,230 and higher, plus airfare.
Part II: $6,770, and higher, plus airfare.

Sail through relatively unknown and more familiar regions that still reflect the influences of early trade relations with the West. Embark Himeji, famous for its grandiose 14th-century castle, and then travel back to the misty beginnings of Japanese history with visits to Miyajima, one of the country's most revered holy places, and Kagoshima, where you'll get a glimpse of life during Japan's feudal period. Stop in Okinawa for more recent historical and cultural attractions. In Nagasaki, visit the Peace Memorial Museum. As you follow in the wake of ancient traders, visit bustling T'aipei in exotic Taiwan; Hong Kong with its stunning harbor; and Hanoi -- cities that continue to grow as centers of trade. Along the way, savor the tranquil beauty of small and beautiful ports and islands such as Vietnam's Cat Ba Island and Halong Bay, where mist-shrouded mountains form the backdrop for hundreds of rocky islets scattered across deep-blue waters.
