THE 2006 SEASON [January through June]
COMPLETED TOURS
HISTORIC CITIES OF THE SEA
May 3 - May 14, 2006 (12 days)
Sail along the northern coast of the Mediterranean, from Venice, Italy, to Seville, Spain, to many of the most historic cities of the region.
History is alive in these lands bordering the Mediterranean, and every day brings a new marvel: the fabled Alhambra Palace in Granada; the
fantastical architecture of Gaudi’s Barcelona; the wealth of Roman and early Christian artifacts at Arles; the dramatic natural scenery of Bonifacio;
the noble Doric Temple of Hera at Paestum; the polished streets of Renaissance Dubrovnik; and the sprawling, 4th-century Palace of Diocletian in Split.
In Barcelona and Seville, Arles and Amalfi, Bonifacio and Dubrovnik, every corner and piazza preserve a memory of the Greeks or the Carthaginians,
the Crusaders or the Moors, the Caesars or the Venetians. Join us for this stellar springtime voyage aboard the 57-suite Corinthian II while
the first wildflowers are in bloom, the weather is mild, and the crowds of summer tourists have not yet arrived.
AGS Lecturer: William Koelsch, Professor Emeritus in the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University.

Ptolemais; the ruins of Leptis Magna, which are among the most
extraordinary ancient sites in the Mediterranean; Sabratha, the ancient city
that started as a Carthaginian trading post, becoming a permanent settlement
in the 4th century B.C., and flourishing in the Roman period; and Tripoli,
Libya's capital, which attracted Phoenician and Greek settlers, followed by
the Romans, who left behind the impressive triumphal arch to Marcus
Aurelius. We will continue our exploration of this ancient Mediterranean
coast with a visit to Tunisia. Discover legendary Carthage, founded in the
9th century B.C. by Phoenicians, whose remains also include Roman monuments.
